Foal Deworming Schedule

At two weeks of age, the foal should be dewormed depending on the mares deworming history.

If the pregnant mare was dewormed with Ivermectin at 10 months of gestation, then the foal should be dewormed with Pyrantel Pamoate (Strongid). If the mare was not dewormed with Ivermectin at 10 months, deworm the foal with Ivermectin.

At 6 – 8 weeks of age, the foal should go on an adult deworming scheduled. Do not deworm foals with Fenbendazole (Panacur).

Parrott Equine recommends deworming every 8 weeks; alternating between Pyrantel Pamoate (Strongid) and Ivermectin. Once yearly, when de-worming, substitute either a double dose of Pyrantel Pamoate, or a single dose of Ivermectin/Praziquantel (Equimax or Zimectrin Gold) for tapeworm treatment.

A fecal sample should also be checked once or twice a year prior to deworming to assess the parasite burden.
